SPOT Earth surface satellite observation system (Satellite Pour L’Observation de la Terre) is engineered by the National Space Agency of France in cooperation with Belgium and Sweden. SPOT includes a number of space-based and ground facilities intended for satellite control, data collection programming, data acquisition and image drawing. SpotImage Company (France) is an operator of the satellite. SPOT-2 was launched on January 21, 1990 in sun-synchronous orbit at the height of 825 km. SPOT-4 spacecraft was launched on March 24, 1998 and placed in sun-synchronous orbit with altitude of 822 km. In comparison with preceding SPOT satellites, SPOT-4 has an additional short-wave infrared band which allows detecting surface type. SPOT-4 is equipped with daughter payload VEGETATION1 apparatus, jointly engineered by European Union, Belgium, Italy and Sweden. Estimated period in orbit is 5 years at least. SPOT-5 was launched from the Kourou Cosmodrome on May 3, 2002 in sun-synchronous orbit at the height of 822 km aboard Arian-42Ð missile carrier. SpotImage Company (France) is an operator of the satellite. SPOT-5 is equipped with high precision stereoscopy detector SPOT-DEM acquiring stereopairs used for global relief modeling perception and elevation plotting. Also it is fitted with 2 high resolution cameras which enable to acquire black-and-white imagery of 5 m spatial resolution (up to 2.5 m in SuperMode process) and color imagery with 10 m resolution. Besides, SPOT5 is fitted with VEGETATION 2 camera enabling to acquire daily images of the whole earth surface with 1 km resolution. Estimated period in orbit is 5 years at least.
